Meet Sandra, OISE Sydney homestay host
Sandra has been welcoming OISE students into her home since 2001. She lives in Paddington, within 15 minutes walking distance of the city. Paddington is a charming area with leafy streets, small cafes, restaurants and boutique shops and is home to Sydney's most famous open air market.
“I started hosting students in 2001 when a school friend who was teaching at OISE at the time, suggested that seeing I was close to the CBD (City Business District) and had a spare room, I should consider having students stay with me.
“Since then I have hosted many lovely students ranging in age from 21 to 71 years old and I remember the first student to stay with me was a German girl from Frankfurt called Judith whom I still have emails from. In 2004 when I visited my son, Micah who was living in Germany at the time she joined me and we had a lovely time touring Munich together.
“I enjoy having students and finding out about their jobs and families and watching them improve their English whilst in Sydney. I usually ask the student to bring photos of their families with them to show me so I can know more about them and hopefully make them feel more at home. I also enjoy including them in family get-togethers if time permits to give them some idea of how other people live in this part of the world.
“My hobbies are tennis, gardening, theatre and ballet and I am currently learning Bridge. At the moment I work three days a week with two barristers in the MLC Centre in Castlereagh Street.”
